The city of Atlanta is a site where many famous events have taken place, significant both historically and culturally. Atlanta is also well known for being the city in which Gone with the Wind was filmed and where the famous stars attended the Loew’s Grand Theatre gala. Atlanta, the capital and largest city in Georgia, is a city of international influence. The metropolitan area of Atlanta is one of the fastest growing regions in the U.S. and the city of Atlanta itself is one of the fastest growing cities in the developed world. The area of Atlanta was founded on what was once home to Cherokee and Creek American Indians, and actually started out as an American Indian Village called Standing Peachtree until it was sold to white settlers in 1822. The name has survived all these years, as Peachtree is one of the most popular and well-known areas in Atlanta today.

The Center for Disease Control and Prevention was founded in Atlanta, and in the 1960’s it was the major organizing center for the Civil Rights Movement. It’s where Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. lived and became famous for his important role in the change in racial attitudes in the nation. Two of the most important civil rights groups were also formed here: the Southern Christian Leadership Conference and the Student Nonviolent Coordinating Committee. Atlanta is also the first city to elect a white southern mayor that opposed racial segregation.

Atlanta is known for being home to the world’s largest aquarium, namely the Georgia Aquarium. It also includes the World of Coca-Cola which features the history of this world-famous soft drink as well as tasting area for all the different coke products from around the world.

While Atlanta is home to so many historical landmarks, it’s also a hotbed of new urban development and a melting pot of immigrant communities. You’ll find many different cultures and religions in Atlanta, making it a very rich and diverse community with many unique attractions only found here.
