Barcelona, located on the picturesque Mediterranean coast, is the second largest city in Spain. With a population of well over 1.5 million people, Barcelona is a city with a lot to offer. Reaching this Spanish city by air is easy, as Barcelona International Airport is an ultra modern airport and the second largest one in Spain right after Madrid-Barajas airport. Founding
This metropolitan city was actually not founded as a Spanish city but rather a Roman one. Barcelona is a city rich in history thus offering tourists a wide array of things to see on their visit. This is a city unlike any other, but at the same time has all the trademarks you would expect a modern major western European city to have such as modern transport and first-rate accommodations. Barcelona was also home to the 1992 summer Olympics.

During the middle ages, this city was also known as Barchinora, Barchenona, and Barchelona. Some historians even state that Hercules founded the city 400 years before Rome was built (but this claim remains unproven). Located on the northeast coast of the Iberian Peninsula, Barcelona is the ideal place for lazy beachgoers as well as the curious tourist looking to explore the rich history of this large cosmopolitan city.

Pleasant Weather
As for Barcelona’s climate, you can expect to enjoy traditional Mediterranean weather: hot summers and reasonably mild winters. Since Barcelona is located on the eastern coast, it means that the west winds never reach Barcelona. Consequently, the winters are not very wet and usually Barcelona can be enjoyed as a low humidity city with virtually no rainfall. One tip however: the summers can be wet due to the fact that it’s relatively close to the Atlantic Ocean. In fact, Barcelona winters can be drier than its summers.

Located on prime Mediterranean coastal property, Barcelona has the distinct advantage of being situated along nearly 3 miles of coastline, with seven spectacular beaches. Industry & Culture
Barcelona is also known for the well developed and sophisticated manufacturing industry. In fact, this industry has played a pivotal role in the history of the city. Expectedly, Barcelona is a major fashion center and even hosted the 2006 Bread & Butter fashion fair.

As a developed and modern western European city, Barcelona boasts a long history of different influences and styles influenced by such greats as the world-renowned Spanish architect, Antoni Guadi. In addition, Barcelona houses a number of top world museums including the National Museum of Art of Catalonia, which features a famous collection of Romaneque art, and the Picasso Museum, where you can view some of Picasso’s greatest masterpieces.
