Bombay Shopping

Once you visit the bazaars and flea markets throughout the city, you’ll realize that Bombay is a shopper’s delight.  You may even find a real treasure among the stalls selling fabulous precious metals and diamonds.

One of the most visited venues for Bombay shopping is Chor Bazaar.  Chor literally means “thieves.”  This is the venue where stolen goods were once sold.  But today visitors can buy amazing items.  It has become the best haunt for antique lovers.  There’s everything from brass handles to clocks, furnishings and household accessories.

Tip:  India does not allow you take antiques that are over one hundred years old out of the country.

Another venue worth the visit for Bombay shopping is the Crawford Market.  It’s located across the street of the police department headquarters and boasts a beautiful Gothic architecture.  The structure was completed in 1869 and was the first to be illuminated with electricity.  Once inside, tourists can appreciate numerous friezes of Indian farmers, stone fountains and beautiful sculptures.  There are stalls selling colorful flowers, fresh produce, poultry and fish.  But there are also scores of cosmetics, gifts and souvenirs.

The flea market on Mutton Street is also among the most frequented establishments for Bombay shopping.  The array of souvenirs one can purchase is quite impressive.  They carry rosewood furniture, porcelain, beads, clothing, music CD’s, pottery and silks.  Make sure to haggle in order to get a true discount.

Zaveri Bazaar is famous for Bombay shopping.  It’s the premier jewelry market of India boasting excellent quality diamonds, silver and gold.  It’s also the oldest gold market.

You won’t find better Bombay shopping than at Khadi Gram Udyog Bhavan.  They stock an incredible selection of silk handbags, tablecloths, clothing and accessories.  It’s also an ideal location to buy well made souvenirs.

Curio shops showcase authentic handicrafts as well as exquisite carpets.  These are brought in from Kashmir, Jaipur and other regions that specialize in hand-made rugs.  The collection of dhurees (cotton woven) is one of the best for Bombay shopping.

Premsons Bazaar is where the trendy and chic do their Bombay shopping.  They host a large number of opportunities for buying soft silks, embroideries, European fashion and one or two Indian designer names.

You can also spend hours browsing through the department stores that display international brands.  Among the most visited are Eternia, Crossroads and Shopper’s Stop.  All three establishments cater to the entire family with emphasis on value and style.

And if you’re looking for haute summer wear, Breach Candy has earned its reputation.  You’ll be impressed with the variety of silk blouses, the latest in swimwear and accessories.

Tourists also frequent the luxurious shopping centers found inside the ritzy Oberoi and Taj hotels.  They’re air conditioned and feature divine boutiques for Bombay shopping.  They’re perfect choices for spending a hot summer afternoon and buying fine jewelry or elegant couture.

Not to be missed are the leather markets like Dharavi.  You’ll be surprised at the low prices and excellent designs.
