Cairo Attractions

Giza attractions are among the most recognized in the world. These are the most impressive monuments built in ancient times. Giza is a must see for any and every traveler in search of ancient history.

Of the most important Giza attractions is the Great Sphinx of Giza. This monument is a statue of a human head on a lion. The monument sits on the Giza Plateau. This is the largest statue made out of a single stone (a monolith). It’s over 2400 feet long and 65 feet high. It’s believed by Egyptologists that it was built in the third millennium BC and is said to be the oldest monument of its kind. It’s also believed that it was built to be the statue of the god of the sun. The statue faces east. There’s a small temple between the lion’s paws. It has also been said that the face resembles that of the Pharaoh Khafra.

Great Pyramids
This is another of the most important Giza attractions. No visit would be complete without seeing the Great pyramid, also known as the Pyramid of Cheops (in Greek) or Pyramid of Khufu. It’s the largest in size of all pyramids. It’s also the oldest. This is the only remnant of ancient Wonders. Egyptologists explain that it was built as a tomb for the fourth dynasty King Khufu. There are three different chambers inside the pyramid. The Queen’s and King’s chamber is at the top.

The Pyramid of Giza is part of a larger complex. This complex is composed of two temples that were used as mortuaries. There’s also three small pyramids constructed for King Khufu’s wives, and smaller tombs surrounding the pyramids. Small tombs were built for nobility.

It’s important to understand that when they speak of the Giza Necropolis, the main Giza attraction, they’re referring to the Pyramid of Khufu, the Pyramid of Khafre and the Pyramid of Menkaure. This Necropolis sits on the Giza Plateau.

The smaller pyramids are also important Giza attractions. The Pyramid of Khafre is somewhat smaller though looks larger. This is mostly because of the way it was placed on the plateau.

The Pyramid of Menkaure is the smallest of the pyramids, yet still impressive.

Other Attractions

Other Giza attractions include a visit to the Solar Barque Museum. This museum is located on the southern side of the Great Pyramid. Here, you can see a solar boat that was dug up and refurbished. These vessels were usually buried alongside the Pharaohs for their use on their travels across the sky. Pharaohs believed to be going on a daily journey with the Sun.

The Pyramids’ Laser show is another of the Giza attractions. It’s quite impressive and a must see. A voice, coming from the Sphinx, tells the story of the Giza Plateau. The laser show comes afterwards with unique displays of lights and sounds.

Camel rides around the pyramids are said to be the rave among travelers and the most fun of Giza attractions. However, a camel ride in the desert is even more exciting.
