Cincinnati Attractions

Most visitors don’t realize that Cincinnati boasts such an array of historically significant attractions.  And aside from these spots, the city is also home to a number of impressive museums and institutions housing important collections on display.  Cincinnati is a superb vacation destination for people interested in culture.

Museums
The Cincinnati Museum is home to several establishments including the History Museum, the Museum of Natural History and Science, Omnimax Theater and the Cincinnati Historical Society Library.  These are said to be among the best Cincinnati attractions, as well as the top cultural venues in the Midwest.

The History Museum is one of the most significant Cincinnati attractions featuring items that relate the development of the city and the region.  Tourists can climb aboard a side-wheel steamboat or see a 1940s World War II streetcar.

At the Museum of Natural History, tourists can re-trace 19,000 years of history and see the recreation of a limestone cave.  If you’re not afraid, you can even observe a live bat colony.

The Taft Museum of Art is another must see among Cincinnati attractions.  It’s said to be among the finest in the American continent.  It’s located in a historical landmark dating back to 1820.  It showcases more than 700 works of European and American art, Chinese porcelains and decorative pieces.  Art enthusiasts will find this venue of much interest.

The Cincinnati Fire Museum is housed inside a 1907 old Firehouse.  This important Cincinnati attraction pays homage to the men and women who served the fire department for the past 200 years.  Travelers can enjoy exhibits of fire buckets, 19th century fire drums and the oldest fire engine in the state.

And among the popular Cincinnati attractions is the Cincinnati Reds Hall of Fame and Museum.  It’s a dream for sports fans.  Displays tell the history of the formation of the Cincinnati Red Stocking team in 1869.

Landmarks and Icons
The Fountain Square Ice Rink is not only one of the fun Cincinnati attractions, but also an icon.  It’s the same size as the one in Rockefeller Center and it’s located at the site of the Tyler Davidson Fountain.  The monument was dedicated in 1871 to the people of this great city.

You don’t want to miss St. Mary’s Church.  It was built in 1842 and is considered to be the largest in the Mississippi Valley.  A clock was installed in the steeple in the same year and the original mechanism is still there today.  The church’s interior is ornate with magnificent works of art as well as devotional artifacts.  The three oil paintings of the Virgin Mary, which sit above the main altar, are considered to be among the most important Cincinnati attractions.

The Cincinnati Music Hall, which was built in 1878, is a place of great beauty and one of the most visited Cincinnati attractions.  It has been described as one of the prettiest in the world.  It’s home to the symphony orchestra and opera.  It’s interesting to note that it was built with private donations in what was the country’s first matching fund drive.
