Grand Canyon Overview

The Grand Canyon, located in the South Western part of the United States in the State of Arizona, is perhaps one of creation’s greatest wonders. The Grand Canyon happens to be one of the most visited places in the world, and provides the most incredible view from its upper rim. It’s one of the wonders of the world and rightfully so. It’s a must see destination, and when you’re there and you’ve seen the unbelievable vistas of the Grand Canyon, you can stay there for hours in a state of awe. For with each passing hour, the scenery changes colors. You will not believe your eyes!

Though it is not the deepest canyon, its incredible size and colorful landscape will amaze you. The Grand Canyon is located within one of the first National Parks in the United States. It is 446 kilometers long, 29 kilometers wide and has a depth of over 1.6 kilometers. It’s known that early Native American settlers lived within the canyon and its caves, prior to the Europeans settling in the area.

Scientists agree that the Grand Canyon was created by the Colorado River over a period of more than six million years. This magnificent site happens to be of geological importance because of the thick sequence of ancient rocks that are preserved and exposed in the walls of the Canyon.

Weather tends to be quite pleasant on the South Rim during the summer, though temperatures in the inner Canyon tend to be extreme. Rain is common during the months of July, August, and early September, but there are plenty of museums in which to weather the storms, while enjoying interesting displays.

The Grand Canyon boasts wonderful restaurants offering great panoramic views as well as delicious cuisine with flavors of the South West. Specialty regional dishes are made with Tequila marinades, and chilies. Several steak houses as well as international restaurants have made their claim to fame by serving fabulous food.

The Grand Canyon is also a great place to shop, with amazing shops offering specialty baskets, pottery, rugs and jewelry by Native American artists. There’s also a huge selection of shops where visitors can find great outdoor equipment for camping, fishing and hiking.

Visitors can enjoy the fabulous galleries where renowned artists like Bruce A. Aiken display and sell beautiful paintings of the Canyon as well as the latest “coffee table art,” which are beautifully designed coffee table books containing pages of magnificent vistas.

There are many exciting ways for seeing the Grand Canyon; visitors can enjoy a mule ride down to Plateau Point, while enjoying dramatic views. Another fun way in which to marvel in the experience is by taking a river trip whether on whitewater or smooth water; and if you just want to take your time and hang back, a tour onboard the train is a real treat. Several companies also offer helicopter rides, giving you a vantage point for unrivaled views.

Whatever you choose to do, your visit to the Grand Canyon will be a most memorable experience.
