Jacksonville Attractions

Tourists will discover that Jacksonville sites are packed with things to do that enjoy world-class recognition. Visitors can explore numerous museums and galleries found in the metro area.

Icons and Landmarks
One of the most important Jacksonville attractions is the Veterans Memorial Wall.  This 65-foot long monument presents the names of local war heroes who died fighting in all wars.  The names go back to World War I through today’s fight against terrorism.  This most impressive Jacksonville attraction is unique in that it’s the only one to name veterans from all branches of the U.S Armed Forces.  The torch that sits in the front of the wall exhibits a plaque that states “in proud remembrance and humble tribute.”

The Friendship Fountain is also recognized among the Jacksonville attractions.  Its style and design are a must see.  It was built in 1965 and is said to be the tallest and largest.

Museums and Galleries
If you only have enough time to visit one museum, the Museum of Contemporary Art is not to be missed.  Its exhibits comprise permanent and seasonal collections.  Throughout 60,000 square feet, guests can enjoy displays of National and regional artists.

The Museum of Southern History is also an important representation of Civil War history and one of the most popular Jacksonville attractions.  Galleries showcase artifacts dating to the war including medical equipment and weapons.  There’s also a display of the period’s fashion.  It’s an interesting venue given the fact that Jacksonville played a vital part in aiding the Confederacy.

Don’t stay away from the Museum of Science and History.  It sits on the banks of the Riverwalk and offers three stories of nature and iconic exhibits.  There are interactive demonstrations and a planetarium waiting for you to explore the universe.

The Karpeles Manuscript Library is among world renowned Jacksonville attractions.  It’s home to the largest collection of manuscripts owned by a private individual.  This 1921 Neoclassical building is another fine example of the area’s architecture.  And the isles of antique editions are among the most extraordinary.  There are even volumes that go as back as the early 1800s.

While touring the city you’ll undoubtedly come across Catherine Street Fire Station Building.  It’s now on the Registry of Historical Places and among the finest Jacksonville attractions.  You’ll enjoy the 500 artifacts from centuries past that exhibited at the Fire Museum housed inside.

The Alexander Brest Museum is on the list of Jacksonville attractions for art lovers.  It showcases fine Steuben glass, cloisonné, Chinese porcelain, ivory and paintings.  They feature monthly shows of regional and international artists.

Nature
If you’re traveling with your children, you’ll have a great time at the Jacksonville Zoological Gardens.  It features more than 800 species of animals living in their own habitats.  In addition to learning and viewing the animals up close, travelers can check out the train rides, shows and unique demonstrations.  It’s one of the best Jacksonville attractions for children.

And if you enjoy bird watching, you can visit the Huguenot Memorial Park.  Climb the tower, rent canoes and hike the numerous trails.  It’s also a fun place to play volleyball, horseshoes or to rent a bicycle for the day.
