Mexico City Dining

Dining critics say that Mexico City is home to some of the world’s best steakhouses.  You’ll find that with more than 2,000 restaurants offering world-class cuisine, you’ll have a lot of choice when dining out.

If you want to try authentic regional gastronomy, you’ll find La Valentina an excellent choice for dining in Mexico City.  The décor is stylish and traditional.  The chef utilizes the freshest ingredients, lots of chilies and aromatic herbs to bring to the table the best of Mexican flavors.  The restaurant is hard to find at first, but well worth the effort.  Specialties of the menu include tacos from the state of Sinaloa and tortillas from the Yucatan Peninsula.

Los Girasoles is not your usual place for dining in Mexico City.  The establishment is owned by two of the city’s important newspaper columnists.  Its location is also unique in that it’s housed in an old colonial home.  The venue’s gastronomy centers on what is known today as Mexican nouvelle cuisine.  It uses pre-Hispanic recipes to create dishes with new spins.  Those who are adventurous should definitely try the worms prepared with chilies or the fried grasshoppers.  If you don’t feel like taking the plunge into the unknown, the flautas filled with smoked cheese are not to be missed.

Old World
If you want to experience the elegance and style of Old World Spain, make a reservation at Meson el Cid.  Its inviting fireplace and beautifully stained glass windows add to the warm and friendly environment of the establishment.  The list of favorites is simply amazing.  From intricate paellas to the slow roasted suckling pig, you’ll enjoy every bite.  Make sure to leave room for authentic nougat for dessert.

Tip:  Don’t miss the Saturday Medieval Banquet.  The food is served by waiters in period costumes while you’re entertained by jugglers and magicians.

Mexican Barbecues
If you’ve never tried a barbeque while dining in Mexico City, you’ll find that El Hidalguense offers the best.  They specialize on slow cooked beef over mesquite wood.  And at this venue, mutton tops the list of most ordered items.  The tacos are not a bad choice either.  And if you’re thirsty, why not try Tequila or Pulque (partially fermented mulch).  The portions are hearty and finger licking good.

Locals love Aguila y Sol for the simple reason that they get to dine on the trendiest cooking styles.  Tortillas are filled with goat cheese and spicy sauces are used on seafood tacos.  It’s a plethora of flavors combined with old time delicacies.  And if you’re still in the mood for the exotic, then don’t miss the crème Brule topped with jelly made from carnations.

But if you’re craving a traditional steak, Cambalache is among the best options for dining in Mexico City.  The portions are enough to feed three people and the flavors are beyond outstanding.  The beef is imported from Argentina and prepared to perfection.  It’s grilled on an open pit and arrives sizzling with flavor at your table.
