Monterey Shopping

Shopping around in one of the most beautiful cities in the world will surely impress even the most well seasoned traveller. That's because Monterey shopping promises to match its environmental experience with that of a very dynamic shopping experience.

Shopping on a grand scale

When it comes to Monterey shopping, it seems that most tourists decide the first place they want to hit is Cannery Row. But here's a tip for those of you who'd rather first shop in a 675,000 square foot, open-air, shopping center in an outdoor garden setting that offers the only major department stores (Macy's and Mervyn's) in a 22 mile radius: Go check out the Del Monte Shopping Center first! It is a Monterey Landmark and promises that more than likely you will find your favorite store there.

Del Monte Shopping Center includes many well-known brand name stores like Banana Republic, the GAP and Starbucks Coffee as well as a decent selection of locally owned specialty shops. There is also a 13-screen, state of the art Century Theatre and a fabulous furniture store as well. When it comes to Monterey shopping, Del Monte Shopping Center has it all.

John Steinbeck’s masterpiece
Cannery Row, made famous by John Steinbeck’s novel of the same name, offers the most distinctive Monterey shopping experience. This is the place where the true genius of the locals comes to the forefront. There are numerous small, independently owned stores and boutiques featuring items that you probably couldn't find anywhere else.

There's the “Rocky Mountain Chocolate Factory” that's sure to delight the kids, “Charms By The Bay” and the “Monterey Peninsula Art Foundation Gallery” that has 30 local artists works on display, from mesmerizing watercolors and oils to sculptures and wearable art. It's truly the ultimate Monterey shopping experience, and all located right next to the ocean!

The artsy getaway

When discussing Monterey shopping one must include nearby Carmel, which is situated in Monterey County and is just a few minutes drive from either Cannery Row or the Del Monte Shopping Center. And what a spectacular finale for your Monterey shopping experience it will be. After exiting Highway 1 going south from Monterey you'll soon find yourself on Ocean Avenue, home of movies stars and recluses, and in a city that defines the word “quaint.” Why not park the car and walk around – this is one town that is super friendly to pedestrians.

Here you'll find some of the most exquisite art and photography galleries to be found anywhere in the world. Cruise through Carmel Plaza and check out what are some of the most unique shops anywhere, such as the “Sand To Glass Works” that offers fine craft-fused glass originals. You'll also find such names as Tiffany and Co., Louis Vuitton and more.

As you shop westward, you'll find yourself being directed downwards towards Carmel Beach. And after a hard day of shopping, what could be nicer than watching a brilliant sunset while sitting on pure white sands and gazing out at a spectacular view?
