Puerto Plata Shopping

With so much to do and see in Puerto Plata, make sure to leave time for Puerto Plata shopping. Most major resorts are filled with small boutiques and souvenir shops. Beware that prices may be higher than in town, but you’ll still find plenty of beautiful island wear, crafts and art.

Shopping Center
Puerto Plata offers great shopping opportunities and at Playa Dorada Mall you’ll find over 80 stores. Every fashion designer has made its way to this part of the world. You can buy the latest trends from Gucci to Versace. There’s also a nice selection of gift shops.

Plaza Turisol is another venue for Puerto Plata Shopping. This large complex houses more than 80 outlets of upscale merchandise, jewelry and gifts. There’s entertainment for the entire family and one of the largest selections of jewelry stores in one venue.

Puerto Plata shopping is also about open markets. These are more available during the weekends. They’re great places for fresh produce, flowers and stalls of nick knacks. You may even find an antique hidden among so much stuff.

Tip: Haggling for the price is accepted. If they refuse your price, walk away and stay nearby. They eventually accept your offer.

Specialty Shops
Museo del Ambar (Amber Museum) is located inside a Neoclassic Building. Don’t miss browsing through the Dominican gems section of the gift shop. The prices are reasonable. In the building, you’ll also find boutiques selling art from Haiti as well as wood carvings by local craftsmen.

The best way to find unique Puerto Plata shopping is by exploring the streets throughout the city. They’re all lined with small boutiques and quaint cafes suited for people watching.

Don’t miss the Grand Factory. This jewelry boutique is ideal for purchasing original amber and larimar pieces. All creations can be credited to the shop’s owners.

In your walk, you’ll also come across swimwear and water sports goods. Fashionistas rave about the bathing suit designs. These are all made in Dominican Republic.

And of course you can’t leave without a visit to a cigar store. Partake in the unique experience of rolling your own and smoke the smoothest and finest cigars around the world.

With the fine cigars bring home a bottle of smooth white or dark rum. Buy directly from the Brugal Rum Factory and you’ll pay amazing prices.

If you find yourself in the Central Park area, don’t miss the bazaar style shops. It’s a great place to buy Dominican sweets, jams, rum and more. Pottery and other crafts are sold at very inexpensive prices.

But if you’d like to find authentic handicrafts, the markets in the hills are your best option. The drive is quite delightful. There are vendors specializing in nothing but Amber and Larimar. Others sell silver and gold at cheaper prices than in town. Pottery, ceramics, wood sculptures and Haitian paintings top the list of great Puerto Plata shopping in this area.

And before you leave, get yourself a CD of the happiest music on earth.
