A trip to Galapagos Islands is always filled with plenty of adventure and new places to explore. You’ll get to see all sorts of species living together in one place. And every island will offer you something different to see.
If you start your discovery of Galapagos Islands attractions in Santa Cruz, visit the town of Puerto Ayora. Make sure to stop at the Charles Darwin Research Station. You’ll come face to face with the world’s largest tortoises. These can weigh up to 600 pounds and live up to 200 years.
Take a bus to Los Gemelos. These twin volcanic craters located in the Scalesia Forest are home to an incredible number of bird species. Make sure to take a stroll through the tortoise reserve. If you make it to the northern part, you’ll come across a lagoon. This is the famous Black Turtle Beach. It’s ideal for snorkeling and seeing the rays and sharks beneath the surface.
This popular site among Galapagos Islands attractions is known for its long battle with pirates, whalers and harsh colonial times. It’s also the location of the first post office which opened in 1793. It was established by English whalers who needed to send communiqués to and from home. You can visit it and send home a letter without using any postage. You’ll be surprised as to how quick it arrives.
But if you’re in the mood for some relaxation, head out to Punta Cormorant and choose between two sublime beaches. There’s a white sandy beach or a green stretch of heavenly coast. Both offer great relaxation and opportunities for sun bathing.
Nestled between the two is a large turquoise lagoon that serves as home to hundreds of flamingos, pintails and other exotic birds. Snorkeling is also a rare treat in this part of the Galapagos. You’ll swim among sea lions and colorful fish.
This tiny island is home to El Junco. It’s the only fresh water lake. It’s not far from Puerto Baquerizo Moreno, the capital of the Galapagos. A must see among Galapagos Islands attractions is the Leon Dormido (sleeping lion). This magnificent rock formation serves as the perching site for seabirds. The shape does resemble a lion in a dormant position.
Another interesting landmark among Galapagos Islands attractions is the Puerto Egas salt mining industry. Visit the area and drive up to the end of the trail where beautiful grottoes await to be explored. North of the bay you’ll get to see Buccaneer Cove. This is an exceptionally scenic area with deep angled cliffs and unusual beaches.
This is the oldest and the flattest of the atolls. Its breathtaking beaches are populated with sea lions and marine turtles.
This large island is said to have the most astonishing wildlife areas and is one of the most visited Galapagos Islands attractions.
At the tip visitors can see Punta Suarez. Don’t miss the roaring water spout that shoots thirty yards up into the air.
