Reno Overview

Reno, located in Western Nevada, is self-proclaimed as the biggest little city in the world. Located 25 miles north of the state capital, Carson City, Reno gets its fame and glory from its casinos, which attract thousands of tourists and casino enthusiasts every month.

Casinos
Reno is well known for its established casino industry. It used to be the gambling capital of the world but it slipped behind in popularity after the rise of Las Vegas and the Indian casino gaming industry in California. That’s not to say that there is any lack of great gambling here. Reno offers some of the best casinos around. A lot of visitors come to Reno for its many smaller casinos offering a cozier gambling atmosphere than the hustle and bustle of the mega casinos found in Las Vegas. Most of the casinos are located on or near Virginia Street, an area that is continuing to experience development.

Much like Vegas, you’ll find plenty of events and shows going on in Reno at the hotel resorts. Some of the top spots in Reno are Atlantis, the Grand Sierra Resort and the Peppermill. Due to the fact that things slow down a bit in Reno during the winter months, some incredibly cheap package deals are offered during the off-season.

There are many special events going on in Reno during the course of the year including Hot August Nights, Best in the West Nugget Rib Cook-off, the Great Reno Balloon Race and some high profile bowling tournaments to name a few of the big ones. From the classic car convention in August, to the Cinco de Mayo celebration, Reno does not disappoint.

Tip: Hotel vacancy is close to 0% during these big events so if you plan to catch any special events, be sure to book a place well in advance.

Sporting Events
Reno really has it all. If you’re a sports fan Reno is home of the Reno Silver Sox Golden Baseball League. If college sports is more your thing, then you might check out the Nevada Wolf Pack events. Due to the increasing influence of sports in the city, Reno has even made a bid for the 2018 Winter Olympic Games.

Weather and transportation
The weather in Reno is warm and dry in the summer, with temperatures ranging from 90 to 100 degrees. Reno can also be surprisingly cold during the winter and light snowfall is not uncommon.

Getting around in Reno is easy thanks to the city’s extensive bus system. The main terminal is located conveniently in downtown Reno. There’s even a special transportation service for disabled people. Free bus service is also available up and down Virginia Street in Reno – a great benefit if you enjoy frequenting the casinos while enjoying food and alcoholic drinks. Amtrak provides national transportation with fairly regular service to and from the city.

Given that the city has great transportation, including free bus transportation for casino goers (an even greater advantage if you drink alcohol), visitors can relax and focus on the things they enjoy most.
