San Francisco has become a tourist hot spot with many famous landmarks that attract travelers from all across the globe. Visit the Golden Gate Bridge. Marvel at the mystery of Alcatraz, the famous prison that was once thought inescapable. Tour the city via the famous cable cars to see an enchanting mix of modern and Victorian architecture, and catch a glimpse of Coit Tower. Or, enjoy sweeping views of downtown from Potrero Hill. There are activities and landmarks sure to impress—no matter your interests. Another positive is that the weather is good all year long, making it suitable for a trip no matter the month.

Established in 1847, San Francisco was transformed into the largest city on the West Coast by the California Gold Rush in 1848. Today, this multi-layered metropolis is home to a variety of people and cultures, and its neighborhoods display the same diversity.

In the Financial District, you'll find both shopping and hotels in close proximity. At Fisherman's Wharf, an ever-thriving fishing community, try some of the famous clam chowder and Dungeness crab. In the same area, you'll hit upon Russian Hill, where the well known, crooked and striking Lombard Street is found, as well as North Beach, the city's little-Italy. Observe the gorgeous murals found in the Mission District, and see the Castro to appreciate the center of gay life in the community.

The city of San Francisco is well known for counterculture in the United States, mainly due to the mass movements that have occurred there. In the 1950s and 1960s, the Beat Generation writers encouraged the San Francisco Renaissance, and soon hippies gathered to Haight-Ashbury. This resulted in the famous Summer of Love and the gay rights movement. The writers and artists who came to the area established the modern coffeehouse culture, and the social upheaval of the 1960s led San Francisco to become the center of liberal activism.

As a melting pot of culture, San Francisco is now a thriving community, where acceptance and respect are highly valued. Be sure to give yourself plenty of time to visit all the wonderful attractions and hot spots it has to offer.
