San Jose Attractions

San Jose offers visitors an array of attractions ranging from museums and cultural center to gardens and wildlife observatories. San Jose attractions are suitable for a wide array of ages and interests. You are sure to learn something new by spending a day or two exploring the best San Jose attractions.

MUSEUMS
One of the most popular San Jose attractions, Centro Nacional de Arte y Cultura (National Center of Art and Culture), runs the length of an entire city block and is the home of the Costa Rican Cultural ministry, a few of the city’s main performing-arts centers as well as housing the Museum of Contemporary Art and Design. The museum is open Monday – Saturday from 11:00am to 6:00pm and you should leave yourself at least 2 full hours to enjoy the museum.

Don’t miss the Museos del Banco Central de Costa Rica (Gold Museum) a well-known San Jose attraction that’s set underground and holds the largest gold collection found in the Americas before the Columbian era. The display is mainly small objects made of gold; in total there are over 2,000 pieces. The exhibit is done in such a fine way that each piece seems to receive the justice it deserves individually. One of the more interesting San Jose attractions, this museum also houses changing art exhibits, coin and stamp collections and more. It’s open daily from 9:30am to 5:00pm and you should factor in between 1 to 2 hours.

The Museo de Arte Costarricense (Costa Rican Art Museum)
displays a wide array of styles in various media forms showcasing some of Costa Rica’s most talented artists. Here you can enjoy both permanent and temporary exhibits. This is a unique way to learn about Costa Rican history through its art. The museum is open Tuesday – Friday from 9:00am to 5:00pm and Saturday and Sunday from 10:00am to 4:00pm.

NATURE
The Butterfly Farmer is easily one of the most beautiful places to visit inside San Jose and it makes for a fun and exciting family outing. At any time of year, you can expect to see between 30 to 80 different species of butterflies. You can enjoy a guided tour or you can feel free to explore the farm by yourself. These butterflies are accustomed to interacting with humans and they’ll often land on a head or shoulder so have your camera ready! The farm is open daily from 8:30am to 5:00pm with guided tours beginning at 3:00pm.

Café Brit Farm
This one-of-a-kind farm is a must-see out of all the other San Jose attractions. Second to bananas, coffee is Costa Rica’s most exported crop is coffee. Easily home to some of the world’s best coffee, Costa Ricans take great pride in the growing, production, blending and serving of the most popular drink in the world. At Café Brit Farm you’ll be able to learn (from a tour and short show) how coffee is grown, harvested, roasted and processed. There are 3 tours daily from 9:00am to 11:00am.
