San Juan Overview

San Juan also known as “La Cuidad Amurallada,” or the walled city, is a beautiful getaway filled with beaches, museums, forts and world class resorts. A history lesson waits behind every corner in Old San Juan in its 16th and 17th century Spanish colonial churches and homes. Old San Juan is known for its casinos, beach, and wonderful Caribbean climate. The charming city stretches for seven blocks on blue cobble streets filled with colorful homes, bakeries and statues.

Plaza de Armas is Old San Juan’s main square and has four large statues to represent the seasons. Meet here to socialize with the locals or meet up with friends for coffee. During the hot months in the summer be sure to stroll around Plaza De Hostos near La Casita for snow cone topped with fruit syrup, also know as piragüeros to the locals. Take in the view of the ocean and mountains at Parque de las Palomas, or Pigeon Park. Make sure to visit the art gallery at the government office.

Take a zip-line tour through the mountains of Puerto Rico or go swimming in the ocean’s clear blue water. Any water sport imaginable is offered and entertainment is abundant every night throughout town. San Juan Island is a combination of mountains, prairie, lakes, forests and beaches. Friday Harbor, a historic town on the coast, is home to some large residents: Orca whales. About 90 in total these whales visit the island between April and September, which is perfect timing for the visitors that pour in during the summer months. Want to visit a winery for the day or go tour art galleries but the kids don’t want to tag along? No problem, San Juan offers Island Rec for kids and teens. Part of the park and recreational district in San Juan, Island Rec offers programs for kids during the day such as swimming, learning about animals, nature trails and team sports.
