Townsville Attractions

Visitors will agree that the beauty that characterizes this part of the world is an attraction within itself. However, Great Barrier Reef attractions include everything from beautiful tropical islands, the renowned outback, rainforests, national parks and of course, to its amazing beaches. Snorkeling, and scuba diving surrounded by beautiful coral and marine life rank at the top in the Reef’s attractions.

Coastal Towns
Visitors will enjoy traveling through the picturesque towns bordering the coast of Queensland. Among the favorites are Cairns, a relatively modern city and a great place to see the North. You’ll find that most resorts, restaurants and boutiques are located here; you’ll also find great botanical gardens and even a casino. The focal point of the town is its beautiful esplanade, with landscaped parks and restaurants on one side and a harbor on the other. A favorite attraction in the area is the railway trip to Kuranda; it’s a great journey to appreciate the beauty of the rainforest and to learn the history of Australia’s pioneers. Along the exciting journey, the train stops at Barron Gorge, a great place for a photo. The view is positively breathtaking.

Once in Kuranda, enjoy more of nature’s magnificence with a tour of Birdland, the Butterfly Sanctuary or the Kuranda Koala Gardens.

Another way in which to enjoy this very scenic region is by way of helicopter or a catamaran tour. Both can be amazing experiences for enjoying Great Barrier Reef attractions.

Scuba divers, listen up, as this is a great area for exploring beautiful corals, seeing moray eels, lion fish and coral gardens.

Another beautiful town to visit is Townsville, sitting beneath Castle Hill. Townsville is also the place to see a coral reef aquarium, the largest in the world, as well as a wildlife sanctuary, art galleries, museums and parks.

Another jewel among these beautiful coastal towns is Rockhampton, somewhat inland from the Capricorn beaches; visitors can enjoy the beauty of Mount Archer National Park, which offers panoramic views of the city as well as the opportunity to see the rare flora and fauna or the region. Rockhampton is an acclaimed beef region, and its botanical gardens rank as one of the best in Australia.

Great Barrier Reef attractions include beautiful islands, some wild and uninhabited, yet great for adventure and exploration. Among the popular islands to name a few is Haggerstone, a great place to view shipwrecks and World War II artifacts. It’s remote yet interesting; Great Keppel Island is the place to go for great snorkeling, scuba diving or to catch some rays on stretches of white sandy beaches.
Bedarra Island, a must for visitors, is truly the epitome of luxury, a great retreat for those seeking relaxation.

Great Barrier Reef attractions are experiences that a visitor never forgets. These special experiences include watching the humpback whales as they make their return from Antarctic or watching dolphins frolic in blue waters. After a visit, you’ll agree that nature is Great Barrier Reef’s best attraction.
