The colorful markets that grace the small coastal towns make Great Barrier Reef shopping a buyer’s delight. Mackay markets for example, are a great place for finding local crafts and the Heritage markets of Kuranda, are the place for hammocks, pottery and jewelry.

Shopping malls in Great Barrier Reef come in different sizes, from super large centers to beautifully designed shopping complexes where visitors can find quality merchandise. The shops of Marina Mirage, located in Port Douglas, are a wonderful line of shops located along a timber boardwalk. Here, you’ll find international labels like Polo, Australian names like Australian Outback Club, great fashion boutiques like Berth 47, jewelry and accessory stores; you’ll find specialty stores that sell hats, handbags and a great selection of scuba gear and surf wear. Marina Mirage also offers an array of gift and souvenir shops, displaying local art and crafts. The complex houses a renowned Persian Rug shop, one of the top in the country, Master’s Persian Carpet Gallery, a must see even if you’re not in the market for an Oriental rug; however, keep in mind, they do ship!

Brisbane is a great place for Great Barrier Reef shopping. Along Queen’s street you’ll find the Queen Street and the Brunswick Malls. The first boasts over 1,200 shops, selling everything from high fashion to fabulous souvenirs. The second, though not as large, is known for clothing and accessories at affordable prices. Both offer great food courts with an array of international cuisines, a great place to buy clothes for the kids.

In Port Douglas, you’ll find shopping like you would in a major city. Its shops boast quality and fashion. One of the most popular shops is Tshinta Swimwear, the ultimate in bathing suit fashion.

One of the favorite places of visitors to shop is Hamilton Island’s Marina Village Shops; here, you can find resort wear, souvenirs and gifts. You don’t even have to pack a suitcase; just bring an empty one and fill it here; you’ll find everything you need for an enjoyable vacation.

Great Barrier Reef shopping takes a life of its own at the numerous markets in the coastal towns. A popular market is South Bank Lifestyle Market, in South Bank. It’s open Friday through Sunday and it’s truly the best place to find Australian arts and crafts, collectables, great souvenirs and great fashion wear created by designers who have not made it big yet, but who are fast becoming popular in the industry.

Don’t miss Fortitude Valley in the Brunswick street mall, which not only offers great entertainment, but has numerous stalls offering great crafts, gifts and one-of-a-kind jewelry, fishing, scuba and water sports gear.
