Williamsburg Overview

A Bit of History
Located on the Virginia Peninsula in the Hampton Roads Region in southeastern Virginia, the city of Williamsburg is famous for Colonial Williamsburg, which is a restored historic area of the city. The city of Williamsburg lies between the James and York rivers, and is the center of the Historical Triangle of Virginia (which also includes Jamestown and Yorktown), and is one of the most popular tourist destinations. Originally named Middle Plantation, the city of Williamsburg was renamed after the capital of the Virginia Colony was moved from Jamestown in 1968. This city is rich with history and sites that remain intact from even hundreds of years ago.
Boasting several different historical sites, the city of Williamsburg is also home to the very first known mental hospital in the US, established in the year 1770 (now known as Eastern State Hospital). Nearby, you can take a tour through the second oldest university in the US, College of William and Mary, recognized way back in 1693. These institutions were just a small part of the landscape of one of America’s first colonial cities of that era, Williamsburg, Virginia.
